Filled to Overflowing Kiddush Cup
One of the primary
ritual objects in Shabbat is the Kiddush cup. My Kiddush cup and
saucer set allow the wine to be filled to overflowing, symbolizing
the abundance of Shabbat. The goblet and bowl-like saucer
combination offer an unprecedented form in the Judaica tradition. I
hope to invite playfulness by making room for the liquid to spill
out of the cup and into the saucer. In addition, the forms undulate
and provide interesting places for the fingers to linger, a metaphor
for the relaxed appreciation of this day, and an invitation to enjoy
the sensuousness of rest and reflection. Bright and colorful glazes
reflect joy and playfulness, while still being beautiful for the
sanctification of the Sabbath.
