Community Collaborative Art
Not By Bread Alone – 1994
Over 150 people healing from
eating disorders from the local Southeastern Massachusetts area
creatively expressed their personal experiences onto slices of clay
bread, regarding the theme of this culture’s obsession with food,
weight and body image. The bread was then hung as the walls of a
house that the viewer walks through from dark to light, as a rite of
passage, illustrating the potential that creative expression has for
healing. This collaborative artwork exposes the cultural
manipulations that are so powerful and insidious, and by revealing a
common community, tangible hope is offered for a future out of this
obsession.
