The Matzah Piece
Boston, MA; 1996.
Thirty Jewish women from the
Boston area wrote and drew about their experience as a Jewish woman
today onto porcelain matzah (unleavened bread. Matzah is considered
the “Bread of Affliction and Freedom,” associated with the Passover
holiday when Jews gained their freedom from Egypt). These matzah
were then tied together to form a Tallit (prayer shawl) and hung in
the form of a Chuppah (ritual wedding archway). The sculpture
embodies and symbolizes a commitment to Jewish women’s freedom of
expression.
